Three Steps To Organizing Your Child’s Room by Beverly Coggins
May 4, 2008 by multitaskingmama
I read “Three Steps To Organizing Your Child’s Room… Creating A Fun and Functional Room For Your Child” from the 1-2-3… Get Organized mini-book series by Beverly Coggins.
My plan was to read it through once, then go back through the book, take notes and write the review. It didn’t happen exactly like that. I read the mini-book, put it down, and then headed straight for my son’s room!
I think what mainly provoked that sudden desire to attack his room was her suggestion of using a bookcase instead of a toy box (the reasons why) and tips on deciding how many and which toys to keep. These 2 went hand in hand for me.
Since I decided to use the bookshelf from the office, I had to remove the books from it and “stuff” from atop it, so technically I hit the office before my son’s room. I actually TOOK OUT the large Rubbermaid tote I was using as a toy box! It’s now in our bedroom overflowing with toys I removed from his room. The toys aren’t missed (as long as I keep them out of sight!) and will be a welcome surprise when I switch some out later on (bringing back some of those and putting away others). This was great timing because he will have a birthday in less than 2 months. The great ideas & info I obtained from this book and the work I did in his room today will make the toy tackle in a couple months a piece of cake!
I only focused on TOYS today, but the book actually walks you through all areas of a child’s room – clothing and toys are of course two big ones, but she also delves into many other areas to help you remove the chaos from your child’s room.
One piece of advice she offers, which can be applied to any room in truth, is that as you go through things, remove anything that does not belong in that room and place it in the room where it belongs. Taking the time to remove it from the room right then only took a few seconds and helped the process! There were a few things I had no idea how they ended up in there, but there were also bath toys that I returned to the bathroom. He must have enjoyed playing with it so much in the bath that he took it along with him!
I wasn’t intending to jump into a project – after all, it’s a lazy Sunday! A little reading and writing seemed to fit the agenda, but a warning about these books… they give you that “hey, *I* can do that” feeling. I love books and ideas that motivate!
